Statement of Purpose- FTII FAC May 2018

Growing up in the pre-television era, cinema was the only audio-visual entertainment available. But then, watching a film was in the theatre was a privilege to be earned by acing the academics-‘get first rank and be rewarded with movie tickets’, was the family rule. Thus, though I did not realize it then, movies steered me towards academic excellence.

Cinema to me meant not just entertainment but education and awareness as well. It was my window to the world of literature, aesthetics and performing arts. Fascinated by my mother’s recounting of scenes from the movie Pride and Prejudice and Gone with the Wind, I would binge-read the novels. That marked the beginning of my voracious reading habit leading to a degree in literature. I developed an ear for music too, thanks to Binaca Geetmala on Vividh Bharati. Encouraged by a family that allowed me to watch ‘good’ films and discuss them at the dinner table, anecdotes of our movie experiences are part of the family lore. A family that sees movies together, stays together for sure!

Why study film appreciation at all? Why study something that I enjoy anyway? Well, it’s an organic growth process to want to understand the creative energy and passion that goes into the making of the final product. Maybe that’s the reason I attend events like Padharpan at FTII and talk sessions with technicians, music directors and movie makers with fervour. There is so much one can learn about the art and craft of the silver screen. I perceive cinema to be the only inter-disciplinary and consummate form of entertainment available to the common man and the most affordable irrespective of one’s personal, social or political identity. Enchanted by its universal appeal, I have always wondered- why and how are certain shots/frames conceived in a particular way? How can one even conceive of themes like Inception, Jurassic Park or Avatar- leave alone transform it onto the silver screen? What’s the need for the song sequence- to break the monotony or to shift the focus? Why do our desi film makers see movies as two halves with an interval in between and not as a whole? And many such questions. I have noticed with interest how films of the 50s and 60s appealed to certain angst and concerns of the common man, the rise of the experimental art/parallel cinema in the 70s and 80s and the romance- driven 90s. Today, with the advent of technology like 3D, 4D, VFX and VR, the magic of cinema is breaking new grounds. Platforms like the internet, NETFLIX and Amazon Prime impact the content, style and grammar of film-making. Whatever be the format or genre, films are here to stay as a favoured channel of creative entertainment. My strongest desire to not just to have a clinical understanding of films but also to sharpen and nurture the cinephile in me. A course on film appreciation will certainly enlighten me on the development of this art form and its journey to the modern times through lectures, film viewings, discussions and interactions with stalwarts from the industry. I’m sure to discover subtle charms and nuances in films that I had not even noticed before and to appreciate how technology aids the creative flights of fancy in modern day masterpieces. And which better institution from, than FTII to learn it all? The Institute is a formidable brand as a school of cinema, given the pantheon of its illustrious alumni who never fail to credit their alma mater for nurturing and honing their talent. It’s a legitimate desire to walk the corridors that they inhabited and be enlightened by its curriculum.

I have been a regular delegate at the Pune International Film Festival for several years now and have enjoyed watching regional and international films. What I enjoy, I value and wish to share the joy wherever and whenever possible. As a soft skills trainer and English Language Instructor, I have incorporated snippets from movies to embellish my training sessions on interpersonal skills, office etiquette, gender sensitivity, body language, ethics, confidence and team building, language proficiency and the like. Going beyond an enduring interest, my love for cinema has proved to be a support. I maintain a bilingual blog with musings on movies among other things. I also host quizzes on movie trivia in social gatherings. Efforts are on o launch a YouTube channel exclusively on movie reviews as an amateur critic (if I may dare call myself so). There’s also the possibility of having discussions around movies with the participants of my training workshops by helping them understand and analyse their own perceptions and personalities through their reaction to the movies. There is so much to look backward to with pride and so much to look forward to with hope. The anticipation of embarking on the Film Appreciation Course is exciting because picture abhi bhi bakki hai, dost!

LET'S COME CLOSER

What would you say about the workshop on parenthood organized by the Chinmaya Foundation? That it was Educative, entertaining and much more.

Shri Kulpathi Balakrishna Joshi, in his inaugural speech at the Andhra Mahila Sabha on 6th August, defined parenthood as a ‘sacred responsibility’. In phrases felicitous he remarked how unwittingly modern parents ape the cuckoo that deposits its eggs elsewhere, thus bidding farewell to its duty all so conveniently. This is often so, for the creche and the school have succeeded-though they can never replace-the home as citadels of culture. He called for a social warfare against demoralizing cinema and strikes that corrode a child’s morality. Mrs. Y G Parthasarathy hit the nail on the head when she emphasized the embodiment of values over their enforcement. Being an educationist herself, she decried the pity of television taking over the mantle of surrogate parents. Like a calculator-cultured mind that has forgotten the numerical tables, she opined, we would rather push the child towards TV and Video games than share with him the magic of the waves or the music of a cataract. Perhaps Kamla Das was just too correct: ‘your rooms are always lit by artificial lights and your windows always shut’.

Here is a word of advice to indulgent parents from DR Papakumari – feed restriction and control too in childhood, though in a mild dosage; this would make the child stoic in the face of shocks and disappointments, later. She condemned the present-day-pupil’s routine: music, dance, sports, class work and the inevitable home work which make life a ‘rigorous rigmarole’. She was quick to point out how this tension makes the child’s entity more of a drill than a thrill.

The next day dawned with the Bala Vihar activities being outlined by two Sevikas. Bala Vihar catches the ‘giggling things’ young and imbibes in them traits of honesty and courage. Charity in Chinmaya Foundation begins with children. The fore-noon session saw a lecture rid of awesome jargon by MS. Shyamala Nagarajan on nutrition. She proved to be a connoisseur at that and the audience eventually became gourmets. Mrs. Padma Narasimhan had everyone spellbound with her talk on the relevance of Gita. Karma Yoga, she prescribed is a vitamin forte for the mind. Benefit we did, and we will by that panacea.

In the modern world, where generation gap has become the burning problem, the group discussions proved most assuring. Transactional Analysis, as expounded by Ms Lily Neelankavil, treated the ‘parent effect’ in a logical way. Her clarion call was, ‘don’t dwarf the child’s identity beneath your monstrous ego; give him a sense of belonging, not of possessing’. Mr Gary Miller’s ‘effective communication’ was everything of a grand treat. What with live demonstrations and self-evaluation tests, it was a pleasure to be reminded of our values. Mr Miller denounced the dichotomy between ‘do as I do’ and ‘do as I say’. The catchy poster ‘ I would rather you walk with me than point the way’ was his focal point.

The open session which was something of an epilogue, dispelled what few doubts there could have been. There weren’t any ‘resolutions galore’, yet a consensus was reached. All parents agreed to spare the rod- thank you dears, we too would spare you the bother. Here are a few points to ponder-what if the child is a bit dim or naughty? Roses do have thorns, yet isn’t the rose sweet? Childhood is a symbolic dreamland, your care and caress will enhance the sweetness-like a dimple on a smiling cheek…..

To Amma on her 85th birthday on 2nd August 2014

Chingaru,  Chingakka ,Chingaru athai, Chingu, Rajam, Rajalakshmi, Chinna Manni, amma,பாட்டி - என்று எத்தனை விதமாய் நாங்கள் அழைத்தாலும், you define every relationship behind those salutations - daughter, sister , cousin ,wife ,daughter in law ,sister in law ,mother ,mother in law, grand mother  ..You have also defied being complacent in those grooves and have set new standards by raising the bar .

ஒவ்வொரு பிரயாணத்தின் போதும் your methodical way of planning has always been a ready reckoner for me .

ஆற்றல் (your tailoring and embroidery skill is just one among many ),அன்பு (நீ சுரபியை சம்ரக்ஷணை செய்ததைப் பார்த்தபோது உன் குழந்தைகளான எங்களை எவ்வளவு ஆசையுடன் வளர்த்து இருப்பாய் என்று நான் உணர்ந்தேன்.)

You ran a பெரிய சம்சாரம் with limited resources .But I have never known you to have come under stress and thrown  words or falter in your responsibilities .

A very unique characteristic I 've known in you is your sense of humour and witty repartees .That you 've kept it alive is a matter of great joy  and evidence of your cheerful personality .I do recall and narrate some in my conversations.

So there you see amma ,you are there in my thought ,word and deed everyday ,day after day after day .

Thanks Amma for being what you are and for being there for us... I wish you have wonderful time today and always.

A Modern Day Draupadi

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".
29 years ago, as the hearse of AIADMK CM MGR left Rajaji Hall for his final resting place at the Marina Beach, Jayalalitha, then the propaganda secretary of the party was shoved off by the party cadres owing allegiance to the CM's widow. 29 years later, the same party cadres stood with their heads bowed in respect mourning her demise at the same venue. When she was allegedly molested by ruling party members at the TN Assembly, she vowed to return to the Assembly only as CM. And return she did, not once, but 4 times over and 2 of the times, back to back, an unprecedented record in the state's history in 3 decades. A modern day Draupadi indeed!

Parallels are often drawn between her and Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Mrs. Gandhi was to the manor born so to say and had actually seen the birth of a nation from her very home and her entry into public life was a given. She had family, education, upbringing and a formidable legacy to fall back on during turbulent times. JJ on the other hand had none of these support systems. A reluctant politician, though she called MGR her mentor, she was compelled to charter her own path, blazing a trail as CM, 4 times over. Hers is history scripted not by Destiny, but one that she chose to write herself!

திரைப் படங்களிலே காதலனும் காதலியும் மண முடித்தால் 'and they lived happily ever after ' என்று முடித்துவிடுவார்கள்...

இன்னும் சொல்லப் போனால் ...a  lesson in life 's basic values .

Emancipation of women ...

Compassion and Inclusion

Actress Shriya Saran is in the news as her new hindi film, a remake of the malayalam hit Dhrishyam is to hit the marquee this friday. I was pleasantly surprised to know she runs a spa named Spandan manned entirely by visually impaired therapists. What made her venture into such an enterprise? In the interview given to Pune Times of 29th July 2015 she says,
" we all grow up sitting in a class room next to a child who is either better or equal to you. So you never grow up helping someone who may be better than you but just less abled.  So a part of you that is meant to show compassion is not developed as you only know how to show competition. As a result, we only know how to show pity instead of compassion. i feel community service needs to be introduced and made mandatory for kids in school."

Point to ponder for sure. Can't help recalling Karthik Subbaraj's short film 'Broken Gods' for Ability Foundation. Worth more than just a view. Click on the link below to watch.

Helping Hands at the Golden Hour

My post in the month of February titled 'யாருக்காக ' was based on a true story narrated to me by a friend. The inspector's in that story was no fictitious character and I came across this article in TOI of 29th July 2015 about a good Samaritan cop who chose to go beyond the call of duty for larger good. May his tribe increase!

WINDS OF CHANGE - Golden hour help: Traffic cop dons director's cap to make 15-minute film for larger good
Pune:

It was on his birthday that Sagar, a resident of Kothrud, met with an accident that left him bleeding on the road with severe head injuries. The accident could have taken a fatal turn, had it not been for a good samaritan, an aged passer-by , who rushed him to a hospital for medical treatment within the `golden hour'.This is the premise of `Helping Hands', a 15-minute film made by Mahesh Kumar Sartape, assistant police inspector with Warje traffic police, to spread awareness about the importance of tak ing accident victims to the nearest hospital within the first 60 minutes, or the `golden hour' to give them a better chance at survival and recovery . Bystanders and passersby , who cannot assist physically , can help by immediately informing the police (100) or the emergency medical service (108), Sartape says through the film.
The film, shot in Marathi over three days at multiple locations around the city , features five professional actors and even the traffic cop in a short role. Sartape has also written the story , screenplay and the voice-over narration, besides directing the film which is inspired by his own experiences in dealing with road accident victims and apathy of the passers-by and bystanders.
Sartape now plans to reach out to the citizens by screening the film in educational institutes and during the Ganapati festival. “The past one year, I have been deputed on the highway and have dealt with a lot of accident cases,“ says Sartape.“In most cases, we were not able to help the victims as the news reached us late. These victims could have been saved if they had gotten im mediate medical care. What's more disturbing was the in sensitivity of the bystanders who instead of taking the vic im to the hospital, chose to ust stand and watch, or worse, click photographs to upload on social networking sites. I would be happy even i one accident victim is saved because of this film,“ he says Sartape cited a Supreme Court order about the role o doctors in treating acciden victim, saying that every ac cident victim has a right to imely medical care.
Sartape is happy abou he response the film has gar nered so far. “We recently screened the film at a girls educational institute and al most every viewer was cry ng at the end of the screen ng. The actors in the film too did not take money as they connected with the socia message. I would be happy i t can be screened at Ganapat pandals this year,“ he says.
Sarang Awad, deputy commissioner of police (traf ic) says, “It is a fantastic film with a lovely message. It's un ortunate that people don' come forward to help acci dent victims. The golden hour can actually save lives and as has been shown in the ilm, the victim may be your own near or dear one.“

To Sir, With Love - Part 2

Being an ardent fan of writer Sujatha, I got to know that Dr Abdul Kalam and he were college mates in St Joseph’s college, Trichy and Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet. At the latter named institute, the former pursued Aeronautical Engineering while the latter chose to master in Electronics.  They also secured first and second positions respectively for their projects. Their association was to continue well into their twilight years. President Kalam , ever the student-centric teacher at heart  that he was, wanted to write a book for children simplifying science and technology . He requested Sujatha, a scientist himself and  popular writer with mass readership, to co author the same. Sujatha is supposed to have remarked, “I’m ready anytime you are, Sir”. Had  that collaboration come through, it would’ve been a best seller translated into every language under  the sun!

There never was one before or after, who re defined the Presidency as he did. Here was a President who stuck to his oily hairstyle making quite many stylists  tear their hair in despair. If his thick grey locks shaped like inverted commas framing the forehead were not shocking enough, the disarming disregard for protocol surely was. He was far too distinguished (already a Bharat Ratna) , even before he became President a good five years later, which can’t be said about some of his predecessors or his successor. Every other First Citizen of the nation has maintained a distance from the common man he/she represents while Kalam reached out to them through the world wide web. A student had casually written to him , inviting him to his college. Prompt came the reply from the President’s office that His Excellency would consider the request anytime he visited the student’s town. Imagine the lad’s surprise a few months later when he actually received a call from Raisina Hill asking whether such and such a date would be fine for the college for his proposed visit! Sweet dreams are made of these…who am I to disagree…

Time was when skeletons were tumbling down the closets of several politicians, industrialists, bureaucrats, film stars, sports stars, spiritual gurus even. A thoroughly disillusioned 20 something of a PYT would tell me, “Aunty, the day I hear of a scam involving Abdul Kalam, I swear I’ll give up all hope on humanity!” Personal and professional integrity, simplicity, humility as character traits and eminence in the hallowed field of space science and defence technology made him an awe- inspiring icon way more than any rock star or movie star ever could.

How able was he as a President? I’ve heard of controversial decisions like declaring President’s rule in Bihar, sitting on mercy petitions indecisively and such. The jury is still out on those. What can you say when given a choice,  he would rather  teach than receive dignitaries,  confer awards or administer oaths?

He once wished to become a pilot in Indian Airforce. He didn’t quite make it and went on to become a scientist. Decades later by virtue of being the President, he would become the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces combining not just the air force, but army and navy as well. Yet he didn’t get to be the fighter  pilot he originally wished to be, you say….

Well he did, almost half a century later in 2006 when he flew as a co-pilot in a Sukhoi-30 from Pune’s Lohegaon Air Force Base. These are tales one loves to tell one’s children and grand children to ignite their minds to sour on wings of fire…Thank You Sir, for being the teacher who taught by example. Thank You Sir, for giving us pride! Thank You Sir, for giving us hope!

To Sir, With Love - Part 1

28th May 2003, IUCAA (Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics) Pune:
The auditorium was buzzing with college students wearing their ID cards like some badge of honour and why not, when the cards were their free passes to attending the 11th President of India’s address to the scientists’ community?  That summer morning,  the Power Point President as he had come to be called, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was sharing defining moments from his career.

He was the Project Director in ISRO for the SLV3 programme, to place satellite “Rohini” into orbit. The project had already overrun cost estimates and was carrying the aspirations of the entire sub continent into the exclusive space club. On the D Day of 1979, goaded by the assurances of the team members, Kalam bypassed the computer system that was warning of a glitch and manually launched the rocket which minutes later, plunged into the Bay of Bengal, turning the dream project into a monumental nightmare. Journalists from all over the world had arrived to report what would have been a historic event. One would think there would have been a witch hunt to fix the blame for the utter fiasco on the scientists involved. Prof. Satish Dhawan the then Chairman of ISRO gallantly stepped forward  throwing  himself to the wolves baying for blood (did he have a 56 inch chest?) and shouldered the responsibility himself for the disaster , re assuring the media and the nation that ISRO will soon succeed in the mission- which it did, the very next year. This time around though, he commanded Kalam to step forward and address the press conference. A leader owns failure himself, but credits success to his team- was the lesson in leadership the man who would be President three decades later, learnt that day.
Thunderous applause rent the air when he recounted this incident to an audience most of whom were not even born when the event happened. Such humility from the man who became the nation’s Missile Man!

“I shot an arrow into the air, it fell to earth I know not where” , my heart would swell with pride whenever I got to recite this poem in school.  What made the man who actually shot a rocket into the air feel proud? Not the satellite launch but a spin off from defence technology –his idea for  indigenous , cost effective cardiac stents and using  light weight carbon-carbon material used for making Agni to make composite material for calipers for polio patients, thereby reducing the weight of the calipers from 4 kgs to mere 400 grams! Polio patients who could barely walk, could now run!
This time it was not just the ovation but full throated whistles from the young audience that brought the roof down. It’s befitting that the central government has now named the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan after him.

Part 1

Rule Reversal for Gen Y

App takes Bard to hip-hop generation
London:
PTI

London: A new app that allows students to lip-sync favourite lines from Shakespeare and mix beatbox rhythms with the Bard's text can make it easier for them to study and experience the famous playwright's work. The app, called Re:Shakespeare, is aimed at young people aged 11 to 18 to let them study and experience William Shakespeare's play `Much Ado About Nothing'. The app, an initiative by UK's Royal Shakespeare Company , also allows students to take a HipHop Shakespeare quiz.
Students can get to grips with the `what, why and how' of Shakespeare's language, with a 360 degree performance of two sections of `Much Ado About Nothing'. Hosted by `Doctor Who' actor David Tennant, the app also features actor Tamsin Greig, voice coach Nia Lynn and director Iqbal Khan, offering tips and advice for understanding and performing Shakespeare. The app includes links to, and quotes from, 19 other Shakespeare plays. “The app sets Shakespeare alongside contemporary artists doing the most extraordinary things with language,“ said RSC's director of education Jacqui O'Hanlon.
“Language is power for hiphop artists and they use it to provoke, challenge and move people just like Shakespeare did,“ O'Hanlon said.
More than three million UK students study the works of Shakespeare every year but teachers are concerned that some pupils struggle to see the relevance of works in medieval dialogue from the 16th century .
The app will be offered as a support to schools from September."

NDTV-We The people

There was this discussion quite a while back on the programme 'We The People' on Legalizing and De-criminalizing prostitution. To begin with I could not clearly understand the diff. between the two. Google came to my rescue and I now understand it as-
legalizing means  regulating it with certain dos and don'ts while de-criminalizing means not binding the profession per se with specific laws relating only to their profession but they have to abide by all other laws as any of the citizens.

One panelist raised a question- if we legalize prostitution, then are we ok with a brothel in our neighbourhood just like other service providers such as doctor, tailor, chemist, beauty parlour, grocer...?

This set me thinking-
Can they -the brothels state their profession as 'commercial sex work' and apply for license, housing, commercial space, electricity meter?
Can a woman of this profession apply for jobs stating her experience in the field and will she get acceptance?
Can they apply for health insurance or group insurance as companies do- what will be the impact on the insurance sector?
Will the stigma just vanish with this move?
I was comparing this to the wine shops - there's a regulation that wine shops should not be opened near housing societies or schools and that they can only sell and not act as bars serving liquor. But the reality is totally different . I have a wine shop at my back yard- my housing society of 11 buildings is on the main road with 2 buildings facing the road and others inside. The said two buildings are partly commercial- housing shops on the ground floor and flats in the remaining floors.  The one right behind my building has a wine shop so the rule 'not near residential areas' is violated. Moreover, the owner has made a partition of sorts with the cardboard cartons separating his shop from the others in the same line ( thank God for small mercies) and his clients are provided with plastic tumblers and they sit on the ground outside the shop and drink and when they've downed one too many, lie sprawled on the pavement conveniently. Very much a bar, sans a name board. I thought of writing to the authorities or to media but decided to be wiser than be foolhardy. It's obvious that he's thriving 'cos the powers that be are looking the other way resolutely. On the same floor, his neighbours are a hardware shop, a doctor,a grocer, a chemist and a shoe shop- but his is the only shop that is open with dedicated workers and clients as early as 7 a.m.

Will the world's oldest profession also operate the same way?

My sympathies are with those who are forced into this line. But what's the way forward?

In a place like India where jobs are hard to come by, how can these women be re habilitated and brought into the mainstream? Would I be comfortable engaging her as a maid or a nanny for my child (considering they are unskilled and don't have much of a choice to settle in other types of jobs) just as I won't be at peace  engaging a criminal out of prison as my driver or office assistant even if he had turned over a new leaf?

The dance bars in Bombay were shut down one fine morning in one sweep by banning all dance bars, without any thought about how all those associated with such bars will find sustenance-not just the dance girls, but the bar owners, bouncers, servers... the clientele used to turning to these bars for relaxation and entertainment felt deprived and looked out for gratification in ...you guessed right- in commercial sex workers. Many of the dance girls tried to earn  money through some other means but mostly turned to prostitution with not much choice. Now there is an idea of re-opening dance bars. Surprisingly Madhur Bhandarkar's movie 'Chandni Bar' portraying the sad state of nautch girls talked about this issue even before the dance bars got banned.

In the discussion on TV some one said' the act of prostitution per se won't be punished but if the woman had 'solicited' then she'll be booked' . Wah! what an idea! If she wasn't offering a service in return for money, there's no reason why she'd solicit in the first place right?

A Lie is a Lie and By Any Other Name, Sucks All the Same...

Written on 3rd June 2014

Lack of educational qualification has never been a moot point in Indian politics. So the brouhaha surrounding Ms Smriti Irani’s poll affidavits is misplaced. Fact remains though, that the alleged disparity has neither been denied nor admitted and an apology offered. And that cannot be brushed aside with the reply ‘judge me by my work’. The common man enjoys no such concessions. His application -even for admission into an educational institution – can be rejected outright if any of his claims in the said application is found to be erroneous  any time . Does ‘honesty’ merit anything at all in public domain? Maybe, ‘to err is human..in human resources’ after all!
And the way it appeared in PUne Mirror of 3rd June :

Letter to the Editor

The suspension of daring young IAS officer Durga Nagpal who took on the sand mining mafia with connections in high places, gives one a scary sense of deja vu (dna,29.7.13). One can’t help remembering whistle blowers Manjunath Shanmugam and Satyendra Dubey who paid with their very lives, fighting corruption and malpractices in their field of operation. Activists and media should keep a relentless vigil on such matters and ensure that honest officials don’t get harassed and more importantly, that criminals don’t go scot free.

The Dark Ages Are Here

Written on 2nd August 2012

For the second time in the last 2 days, 19 states of N India, Eastern India suffered a power outage on account of grid collapse. read the article from Pune Mirror and my letter to it’s editor.
Dear Sir,
This is with reference to ‘Dark Age: 60 crore hit as power snaps in 19 states’ (PM dt 1st Aug 2012). It was not just a grid collapse but a complete breakdown of governance. An outrageous outage of such proportion would have resulted in the axing of a host of officials, elsewhere. But in our ‘shining even amidst darkness India’ the minister is rewarded with a promotion to a more sensitive portfolio.Isn’t accountability part of his job profile or KRA? The darkness that half the nation plunged into, has ironically thrown light yet again on the appalling circus called UPA government. With a shameless and hopeless government  that couldn’t care any less, in power, the man on the street as usual, is helpless.

Debate on MTP

Written on 21st July 2012

Recently there was this debate on MTP in Vijay TV’s Neeyaa Naanaa programme.
My two cents:
பல பேர் ஒரு விதமாய் வாதம் செய்கிறார்கள்- I mean the ones against MTP even in cases diagnosed with congenital abnormalities -நல்ல விதமாய் பிறந்து சில வருடங்கள் கழித்து எதாவது விபத்து நேர்ந்து அதனால் அந்த குழந்தைக்கு கை, கால், புத்தி சுவாதீனம் இல்லாமல் போனால் அப்போ நாம் லட்சம் லட்சம் ஆனாலும் செலவு பண்ணி வைத்யம் பார்க்க மாட்டோமா என்று.
மேலும் in case of complications when either the mother or the baby alone can be saved the choice is heavily tilted in favour of the mother-how can one justify that choice?
One should aim at bringing forth a member of the society, not just a number in the society. The society which cries foul at MTP- how supportive is it if the family suffers economic, social, medical, educational or occupational hurdles- what is the society’s contribution towards providing education to dyslexic or autistic children, towards making buses, trains, buildings accessible to wheelchair ridden citizens, towards accepting and rehabilitating the differently abled- one can go on..It’s one thing to mouth ‘holier than thou’ sermons and it’s another to actually step out and offer succour or fight for changes..
