The following is taken from a biography of Audrey Hepburn that endeared her to me even more:-
“The problems that cause so much suffering, come from greater causes than famine, flood, drought or any natural disaster. We are dealing with a far more ominous threat than sickness and death. We are dealing with the dark side of humanity – selfishness, avarice, aggression. All this has already polluted our skies, emptied our oceans, destroyed our forests and extinguished thousands of beautiful animals. Whatever relief work that we offer for the poor and under-developed nations are but an attempt at curing the symptoms of man’s tendency to destroy everything that we hold dear – we need to strike at the root cause – man’s apathy towards the plight of his less-privileged brethren – be it a famine, excruciating poverty, civil strife or ethnic massacre, the truth is glaring – they are not natural disasters, but man-made horrors, for which there’s only one man-made solution – Peace. As long as nations continue to lift swords against one another, there never can be everlasting Peace. Help and Relief, the way they pour in, in times of disasters, are clear indication that there is no deficit in human resources, but only a lack of pro-active human will.
Politics is essentially the Governance of the people, for the welfare of the people. One may not believe in Collective Guilt, but one must believe in Collective Responsibility”.Reminded me of a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson in which he speaks of how a charitable disposition is what distinguishes men from beasts…
