Watching for the nth time the 1968 B&W tamil Krishnan-Panju classic under AVM banner ‘Uyarndha Manidhan’ on Kalaignar TV. Sivaji as middle aged millionaire tycoon and Sowcar Janaki as his wife-such riveting performance! Esp. Sowcar Janaki looks very much to the manor born in the role of the educated high society dame and the role sits lightly on her shoulders.Her entire look-the hair-do, jewellery, sarees and the way she drapes them all speak of ‘khandani’ bearing. Sivaji looks so handsome with the streak of silver in his hair.This is one of his rare movies where he has given his art the right dose of restraint in portraying a man seemingly composed but weighed down by lost love of the youthful past.This movie is presumably the 100th movie of Sivaji and befittingly so. The story and the role give good scope for the actor in him to give full vent to his histrionics. It must be said his performance is a study in voice modulation, body language,the works!The song ‘andha naal gnabagam nenjile vandhadhey’ is worth a watch many times over just for the stylish body language of Sivaji. Never knew a golf club can be a stylish prop!Easily a must watch on the silver screen.
This Uyarndha Manidhan ‘ really made Major Sundararajan stand parallel to Shivaji ,Each and every step of’ Nadigar thilagam’ reached the ‘sigaram’ in all aspects. Vanisree’s acting skill though her role was less in the movie, Bharathi teaching Sivakumar in a friendly way….. Sowcar Janaki reminds me of my BA., friend ‘mookkuth thooki Jayasri’ her nose and the way she carried herself was somewhat similar to Sowcar.

One thing those days many movies spread illicit relationship and illegitimate kids but was accepted by the society may be due to helplessness and there was no way to escape. Those days ,we, the society was more focused into the acting skills, direction etc that not much opposition or anything mentioned in the media about the wrong doing by the protagonist(s).
